WIGHTLINK has reduced the toll at Ryde Pier.

As reported, the toll was doubled last month from £1 to £2 — with a cheaper £1.30 charge for contactless payments — following the introduction of a new contactless payment machine for people paying by card or with their phone.

However, the company said today (Thursday) the charge has been reduced to £1.30 regardless of how people pay.

Chief executive Keith Greenfield said: "Since the installation of the new barrier at Ryde Pier most customers are now paying the £1.30 toll using their contactless cards.

"Listening to feedback, Wightlink has harmonised the charge to £1.30 by both contactless card and cash.

"However payment by exact coins is required as the cash machine is unable to give change."
