TOTLAND has won the best community initiative in the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Awards for its mosaic project.

It's the recent second trophy for the village, after the parish council took the overall prize in the IW's Best Kept Village Awards.

The two-year mosaic project has been led by Helen Goodman of the Totland Bay Mosaic Arts Company, who has designed the pictures on display on the outside Totland Pier toilets.

The mosaics have been put together by a team of volunteers who meet each Tuesday afternoon.

There are currently five mosaics consisting of a men's and a ladies sign, as well as Totland landmarks — the pier, Hurst Point with the sea wall and The Needles including coloured sands, and the downs and Headon Warren.

At the bottom of each is one line of the chorus of the Totland Waltz, which was sung every Friday at the former Totland Bay Hotel when visitors were celebrating their last night before returning home.

When the project is complete, there will be more panels with the rest of the chorus on them.

Parish council representatives travelled to Chandlers Ford to collect their trophy.
