THE Isle of Wight’s community radio station, Vectis Radio, has been recognised at the annual National Community Radio Awards for the second year running.

The station made the shortlist, which was whittled down from more than the 425 entries, submitted from community radio stations around the UK.

The awards ceremony will take place on October 26 at the Memo Arts Centre in Barry, Wales.

The station has picked up nominations in three categories — sage person of the year, for those over the age of 60, for presenter Kelvin Currie, community show of the year, for its 'talking council' programme, and community development project of the year for its 4Ps project, to provide free training to young people.

Ian Mac, Vectis Radio station manager, said: “We are delighted to have been recognised among many other stations doing great work across the UK.

“I am so proud of the hard work and dedication shown by our relatively small team of volunteers here at Vectis Radio.

"These awards allow a chance for them to receive some recognition for their talents and determination to make the station what it is.

"Our flagship 4Ps project is about giving youngsters an opportunity to show their talents and they have been amazing. I am so pleased to have been nominated for a second year."

Kelvin said: “I am honoured to be nominated for doing something I enjoy immensely.

“I'm in some pretty amazing company in this category and just being nominated is fantastic.”

Martin Steers, awards chair, said: "Every year I continue to be proud by the quality of the submissions and what they represent, the fantastic work that our community radio stations do in their communities.”

"We wish Vectis Radio good luck and can’t wait to host the ceremony in Barry in October.”
