CHEQUES for more than £9,000 have been donated to various local good causes and charities following the record-breaking Shorwell Midsummer Fair.

Chairman Steve Cram, speaking at the committee's AGM, said the excellent weather and well-attended fair resulted in its best-ever takings, which allowed the committee to donate the large sum to various local organisations and groups.

Among those to receive donations were Brighstone Scouts and Guides, The Newsletter, Brighstone School, West Wight Sport Centre and Shorwell Recreation Ground.

The Brighstone School donation will go towards maintaining a garden which won a silver award at the Chale Show.

Another of the main beneficiaries was Shorwell Village Hall where the money will be used for roof repairs and refurbishment.

In all, more than 14 recipients benefited from the fair.

Next year's fair — the 60th consecutive year it will have been held — will be at Northcourt, on Saturday, June 20, 2020.
