A MOTHER has been given an overnight curfew after attacking the father of her child.

Jade Barry, 23, of Nelson Drive, Cowes, pleaded guilty to assault by beating at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "At the time of the incident on June 17 the couple had split up, but were living in separate rooms.

"The defendant had gone out drinking and when she returned she found him in her room with their baby in his arms."

The court heard that the child struggled to sleep unless one of her parents slept beside her in Barry's bed.

Mrs Smout said: "She told him to get out, so he got up with the child in one arm to leave before she blocked the door demanding that he leave the child, but he refused, saying she was too drunk.

"She then told him 'why don't you just kill yourself?' before attacking him.

"The two were wrestling on the floor as he held the little girl in one arm and a phone in the other. The police were called, and she was arrested."

Barry told police she had acted in self defence, but later admitted her former partner had no reason to lie.

Barry Arnett, for the defendant, said: "She did say she had been pushed, but she also accepts her reaction went too far.

"It must be very difficult for anyone whose relationship has broken down to see their former partner every single day.

"Her ex has now moved out and they have come to an agreement in regards to access to their daughter."

The magistrates gave Barry a 12-month community order to include 25 rehabilitation days.

She was also given an electronic curfew between the hours of 6.30 to 7am, and was ordered to pay court costs of £85 and a surcharge of £90.
