THE Isle of Wight Zoo has begun preparing staff and visitors for the death of one of its most beloved animals.

Aysha the Bengal tiger, at the grand old age of 21, has been with the zoo since she was a three year old cub, but now her health is beginning to fail her.

Known for a calm demeanour and kitten-like attitude, old lady Aysha has been an iconic part of the zoo for more than two decades, but now the zoo has decided to let her rest.

A spokesperson said: "Because of the special relationship this iconic tiger has with our visitors, we wanted to let you know that at the very grand age of 21, Aysha’s health has started to deteriorate to the point where we have, together with our expert veterinary team, decided that it is time to say goodbye to her.

"Charlotte Corney, our founder, reared Aysha from a cub and is with her 24/7 to keep her company and monitor her condition.

"She wants to reassure you that all is peaceful and Aysha is content resting, mostly in her bedroom.

"If you would like to visit her one last time then you are able to do so today."
