THREE Isle of Wight businesses have been taken to court following the death of a bricklayer, who fell from the first floor of a building and suffered a serious injury head injury.

David Shayler died following an incident on Atkinson Drive, Newport, in 2016.

The Health and Safety Executive is prosecuting three companies and two individuals for alleged breaches of health and safety law.

HJ Bennett is charged with a self-employed person failing to discharge general health and safety duty to a person other than an employee.

Ryde Demolition Company and Stoneham Construction are charged with contravening a health and safety regulation.

Nigel Bennett, 52, of Foreland Road, Bembridge, is charged with failure to discharge health and safety duty to a person other than an employee.

Neil Harrison, 60, of Gordon Close, Binstead, is charged with contravening a health and safety regulation.

The case went before Portsmouth Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday) and was sent to Portsmouth Crown Court.

No pleas were entered.

The case has been adjourned to October 29.
