A FORMER nurse died as a result of complications after she accidentally took a large quantity of paracetamol tablets while suffering with sepsis.

The Isle of Wight Coroner's Court heard how Mair Phillips, 87, had been suffering with a septic toe.

During her illness, her son-in-law brought her a pack of paracetamol, only to be horrified later in the day when she called him asking for more as she had finished the packet.

Mrs Phillips was rushed to St Mary's Hospital where she was treated for a suspected paracetamol overdose, before being discharged to Solent Grange Nursing Home in Ryde.

Mrs Phillip's GP was initially unaware of her stay at St Mary's Hospital, or her discharge, due to a failure by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust to attach a proper discharge notice to her file.

Coroner Caroline Sumeray criticised this, addressing a representative of the trust in the court.

She said: "This is not fair and it's sloppy. They were well aware she would be going back to an address that was not her own, and they didn't bother to update her details on the system."

Ms Philips died at the nursing home on June 28, 2018, two weeks later.

Her daughter said: "My mother went into nursing as a teenager, and she loved it. When she went into St Mary's Hospital, she kept telling me she helped open it.

"She was confused, but while she hadn't helped open it, she did help open other hospitals back home in Pembrokeshire."

Mrs Sumeray concluded Mrs Philips died as a result of cardiac failure stemming from the complications of an accidental paracetamol overdose.
