Have you heard of Goatober? This October, the Isle of Wight’s very first Goatober will be launched to raise awareness of goat meat, milk, cheese and fudge produced on the Island.

The month will be dedicated to all things goats — a celebration led by Kingston Smallholding Goat Farm, near Shorwell, and Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm, near Yarmouth.

They are asking food suppliers and restaurants to support the scheme by adding their goat products to menus throughout the month of October — and in the future.

Goat is the most commonly eaten red meat in the world, as many cultures do not eat beef or pork.

It is growing in popularity in the UK due to ethnic diversity and the fact goat meat is leaner and has fewer calories and less cholesterol, fat and protein than beef, pork, lamb or even chicken.

Goat milk, cheese and fudge also have similar benefits and can be used for a variety of different dishes.

Kingston Smallholding started with a small herd of Golden Guernsey dairy goats and pygmy goats, and then some Boer meat goats.

After obtaining Environmental Health Officer approval earlier this year, with the help of a number of Island butchers, they tempted a few select pubs and restaurants with their goat meat. All have reported great interest from diners.

Visits to the farm can also be arranged, to view the goats.

Green Barn Dairy Goat Farm was the IW's first and only commercial dairy goat farm when it opened in 2013.

It now keeps around 100 goats and supplies a range of fresh, artisan goats milk, cheese and fudge to several outlets.

They also have a shop and tea room open daily from 10am to 4pm.

The Goatober launch will take place at The Crown Inn Shorwell on Friday, where a number of goat dishes will be available in addition to their regular menu.

Simone and David will also be giving a presentation. Booking is advised.

On Sunday an eight-mile Goatober walk will take place, including a lunch stop at the Crown Inn, Shorwell.
