A NEW map of Newport has been installed in the High Street, directing visitors to the highlights of the Island's county town.

Funded by Newport and Carisbrooke Parish Council and the Isle of Wight Chamber of Commerce to the tune of £3,000, and made by Newport firm A.J Wells, the artistic design has been based on a hand-drawn map by Carisbrooke artist Alan Rowe.

It has been placed by the Guildhall, and also features historical facts about the town.

Parish council chair, Cllr Julie Jones-Evans, said: "I'm overjoyed at how this map has turned out.

"It's a wonderful interpretation of part of the county town, which is not only a beautiful legacy, but a practical guide that will assist in way-finding.

"Alan Rowe and A.J Wells have produced a stunning piece of public art and we are proud to have a prominent example of world class enamelling in the town it is made in."

The unveiling of the map has been timed to coincide with the Newport Living History project, aimed at gathering information about the town from the last century through interviews and photographs.
