GREEN thumbed competitors took to the Haylands Horticultural Show on Sunday to show off their meticulously arranged fruit, vegetables and crafts.

The show saw 405 exhibitions taking up tables in the Haylands United Reformed Church, ranging from delicately grown dahlias to pristinely compiled fruit baskets and hand knitted jumpers.

Exhibitor Andrew Nightingale said: "I've done fruit, I've done some veg, I've done the dahlias and pot plants.

"I've won the tomatoes which is good, and I even won the carrots which I entered as a bit of a joke.

"The dahlias have been the hardest, they want water constantly and you cant leave them alone and after 50 something years my wife has started telling me at some point she's got to take precedence over my dahlias."

Martin Stock, secretary of the Haylands Horticultural Society, said: "This is our 45th show at this venue, the turn-out was very good.

"The flowers and some of the fruit and veg are great and as well as our very local contributors we also had exhibitors from Bembridge, Brading, Chillerton and East Cowes."
