E.E DOWNER butchers in Newport, which earlier this month announced it was to close after 84 years of trading, will continue to trade, courtesy of fellow Island-based family butchers W.W Woodford & Son.

The news of another small business disappearing from the high street disappointed Island residents recently, but Bembridge based W.W Woodford & Sons, established in 1903, has announced it will take over the management at 1 St James’ Street.

Bringing the Woodford name to the heart of the Island ensures that Newport continues to benefit from high quality, local produce from a reputable, family-run supplier.

The ill health of the current owner, Greg Downer, has led to the change in management but the quality of meat will not be compromised.

Graham Hawkins, owner of W.W Woodford & Sons, said: “We were shocked and saddened at the announcement of the closure of this popular store, and immediately saw an opportunity for us to continue the supply of quality meats and local produce to Newport.

“We look forward to serving existing customers and welcoming new members of the local community into the shop.”
