GERMAN Ambassador Julia Gross has visited the Island — and enjoyed it so much she will return to celebrate her birthday.

The visit, last weekend, was hosted by the Isle of Wight German Twinning Association to honour Prince Albert.

Arriving from the German Embassy in London, the deputy head of mission met twinning association members and enjoyed a meal at Hewitt’s restaurant in Newport.

They discussed issues including Brexit, which Ms Gross described as 'a topic everybody is thinking about with people on both sides of the debate having their say.’

She thanked everyone involved for ‘making two days possible, providing an incredible welcome, and sharing insights on Island life.’

Edgar Piper, Chair of the Isle of Wight Twinning Association, said: “Shortly after her visit, Julia Gross sent a letter to us.

“Therein, she stated she had been telling people in Germany and within the London Embassy how wonderful the Isle of Wight is, and how much she appreciated the kindness of her hosts.

“She expressed a desire to come back soon.”

The Embassy also sent its best wishes and expressed an eagerness to maintain close links with the Island.

A member of the London Embassy staff said Ms Gross intends to celebrate her birthday on the Island later this month.
