THE Steve Porter Transport Group has pledged to remain loyal to its Isle of Wight roots, following the announcement of a merger with Knights of Old Group.

The company, which employs around 45 people on the Isle of Wight, will continue to be based at the main headquarters in Cowes, in addition to secondary sites in Portsmouth and Southampton.

Managing director Malcolm Gibson said: “This secures the long-term future of the company, fitting in nicely with the Porter family’s ongoing plans.

"The merger allows the opportunity for future investment, raising the profile of Steve Porter both on the Island and on the south coast, while allowing the company to offer a wider range of services to its customer base.

"The Knights of Old Group is strong in the midlands and northern England, so this represents a natural strategic move for both companies to develop national and European coverage, which will see the groups combined fleet increase to 300 vehicles and 350 trailers employing over 700 staff.

"We intend to continue to support the local community, this is a positive step in ensuring the long-term prosperity of the company."

The Steve Porter Transport Group was founded on the Island in 1981 as a sole trader business, establishing itself as a leading distributor. In 2011, it acquired Red Funnel’s distribution division.
