HARDCORE gym-goers notched up an incredible 40,000 burpees to raise funds for Mountbatten.

Members of CrossFit Incursion, a strength and conditioning gym in Ryde, completed the two-hour challenge at Appley beach on Saturday.

Around 60 fundraisers took part in the event, raising an estimated £3,000 for the Isle of Wight hospice charity.

Camilla Barton, who co-owns the gym with Nolan Hermans, said: "We want to thank everyone for all their burpee efforts, Clare Ross for her amazing press help, and all family, friends and passers-by for generously donating.

"The challenge took more than two hours to accomplish, with each participant completing between 50 and 1,150 burpees, depending on their fitness level.

"There were a few achy bodies afterwards but everyone enjoyed themselves and did their best.

"It was an awesome team effort from the CrossFit community, all in aid of an amazing cause."

Nigel Hartley, Mountbatten chief executive, said: "Just thinking about this challenge makes my legs ache!

"A huge thank you to everyone at CrossFit Incursion for being such great sports and taking up this amazing feat.

"It is thanks to support like this that we can carry on providing and growing our services to ensure no-one on the Isle of Wight faces death, dying or bereavement without Mountbatten by their side."
