FIRE crews were called to a burning field of crop stubble after the alarm was raised this afternoon (Thursday).

Firefighters were called at 4.03pm to reports of a 400m by 200m area of field on fire off of Alverstone Road in Apse Heath.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called to a large fire out in the open near Alverstone Road.

"Three appliances from Shanklin, Newport and Ventnor attended the scene joined by two water carriers from Freshwater and Ventnor."

"The fire crews gave the stop order at 4.48pm and no one has been injured."
