SHANKLIN Regatta drew people from across the Island on Thursday, for a wide range of events.

There were art and sandcastle competitions, a knobbly knees contest, a beauty pageant, tug-of-war, and races.

The first place for the sandcastle competition, and second place in the art competition, went to Ellie Tinsley Marshall, 14, alongside her sister Laura, seven, who came in third in the sandcastle competition.

Ellie said: "I just did a dragon, and I was really happy with it but sadly it got washed away by the sea. "We've also been doing the art competition, I'm into designing, and I drew a girl in some dungarees with her hair up because that's something I hadn't done before.

"We are really liking it here, we have had a really good day."

The beauty pageant drew crowds as the title of Shanklin Regatta Queen was handed to Emma Howes, 22, who entered the competition alongside her sister Becca Howes, 18, who came third.

Emma said: "I just thought it was a bit of fun and my nan entered me into it back when I was nine and I came in last. So now I'm back."

Becca said: "I live here and my sister lives in London, so whenever she comes back its like a holiday for the both of us.

"I just think this is a fun way to get involved with the community."

The knobbly knees award went to John Smith, 68, from Sunderland, who said: "I've always been proud of my knobbly knees, although I used to keep them covered up.

"I might come back for another trophy next year."

Steve Knight, Shanklin mayor, said: "Shanklin Regatta has been going for 168 years and we are just so lucky that the weather turned nice for us, so all the children, holidaymakers and locals could enjoy the fun.

"We would like to thank Shanklin and Sandown Rowing Club, Shanklin Rotary Club and Inner Wheel who all helped with the administration and fundraising."

The regatta raised £865 towards the fireworks.

The winners of the Lucky Programme are 1170 in first place, 1165 in second and 1091 in third.
