TWENTY-nine Islanders took to the skies as part of a group tandem skydive.

The third annual sponsored skydive for the Wight Brainy Bunch saw the group jump 10,000ft out of a plant at the Isle of Wight Airport, Sandown.

Jan Morris jumped in memory of her daughter, Alayna Morris, on what would have been her daughter's 19th birthday.

Alayna died in November, just eight months after she was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour.

Jan said: "The last eight-and-a-half months have been the hardest of my life and every day I miss her so much, it breaks my heart.

"I know she would want us to keep living. So much so, I questioned how we would mark her birthday.

"That decision was made for me when I found out about the skydive, which she would have wanted to participate in.

"The Wight Brainy Bunch has been a constant support to us all throughout Alayna’s journey and beyond."

The charity raises money for Islanders affected by brain tumours and was founded by Ryde firefighter Mark Grimes, and his wife, Kathryn, following his diagnosis in 2015.

Kathryn said: "We have been overwhelmed by the response we received when we announced this year's skydive.

"So many people have their own personal reasons for choosing to jump with our charity.

"It is truly humbling to hear their stories, and we are so grateful for the support we continue to receive."

Other skydivers included 75-year-old Joan Finch, who lost her husband, Reg, to a brain tumour in 2017.

She said: "Mark and Kathryn gave us support, which continues to this day.”
