WITH entries inspired by Alice in Wonderland, Jurassic Park, Deadpool and Dr Who, Shanklin Carnival was a colourful affair.

The children's procession was held on Tuesday afternoon last week, followed by the main event on Wednesday evening.

Colourful characters included Spiderman, Harley Quinn and Where's Wally, along with the Island's own Wight Knight.

Paying tribute to those who took part, and the hard work of volunteers, organiser Denyse Larner said: "We have only half a dozen people in the committee and the only grants that we have are from pub crawls or jumble sales we put on through the year.

"I personally enjoyed the 'heaven and hell' float, a lot of work went that into that one and it looked really good."

The illuminated parade, due to be held on Saturday night, was cancelled due to the bad weather.

Ms Larner said: "It still got people out and the pubs in the area always do extra things so the community can get together.

"It's a fun day, its a community event, and we do it for the people of Shankin. The people of Shanklin want the carnival and our committee will keep going as long as they want the carnival. It's for everybody."
