DESPITE the appalling weather and wind conditions, Sandown Regatta managed to plough on with a few events on Sunday.

The sailing and kayaking events — and the round the pier swim — were cancelled early on in the day due to the size of the waves.

However, the beach events went ahead despite heavy rain, which eventually cut them short.

There was good support for the tug-of-war, sandcastle competition and the beach races.

The tug-of-war was won by The Old Boys, with Happy Days in second place and Team Gun in third.

The dance display by Dance Vibez and Magic by Andy show were enjoyed by all, but the air sea rescue and the visit by the cross-Channel ferry Commodore Goodwill were cancelled.

The day ended with a grand fireworks display, as planned.

Tom Gifford, of the Regatta team, said: "The forecast was terrible and when the rain came we nearly cancelled it all, but it all worked out OK in the end."
