A HUGE crowd turned out to cheer on the teams at the Wight Marine World Pedalo Championships at King's Manor Farm, Freshwater, on Sunday.

The event raised more than £10,000 for Wetwheels, a sailing charity run by paraplegic yachtsman, Geoff Holt, who lost the use of his legs following a diving accident when he was 18.

Wetwheels takes out disabled young people, and their helpers, for sailing trips.

Geoff was there, along with IW Lord Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, to present the Claret Jug to the winners, Cheetah Marine, who were also the youngest team taking part.

Organiser Miles Peckham said: "This was the second world championships, but the third year the pedalos have been running for Wetwheels.

"In our first year we broke the pedalo world record.

"We have raised around £50,000 for the charity so far and every £1,000 will take 40 people out on the water.

"It's ironic that Cheetah Marine won it because they make the Wetwheels boats at their base in Ventnor.

"A total of 16 teams took part in ideal conditions including three yacht clubs, the Royal Solent Yacht Club, Yarmouth, South West Shingles Yacht Club and Itchenor Sailing Club, Chichester.

"There were also teams representing Virgin Atlantic and Wight Marine/River Yar Boatyard, who sponsor the event.

"The racing was fantastic and, for a couple of races, we had to refer to video to see which team won."
