A DRINK driver who left a nightclub — determined to get in his car and leave the Isle of Wight forever — ended up in court after crashing into two parked cars.

Appearing at the Isle of Wight Magistrates' Court last Tuesday (July 30), Corran Vercoe, 19, of Clarence Road, Newport, pleaded guilty to drink driving.

The court heard he left Fever nightclub in Newport at around 3am, on July 1, and was seen by witnesses around half an hour later driving at Dover Street, Ryde, where he crashed into two parked cars.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "Vercoe got out of the car and said to the witnesses that he had been drink driving, and he was about to lose his job."

The court heard he called the police himself, then waited for them to arrive.

At the time of the crash, Vercoe had a breath alcohol reading of 92. The legal limit is 35.

Mrs Smout said: "He decided he was going to leave everyone and everything on the Island behind and the drink had given him the confidence to do that."

Vercoe had been heading to Ryde Pier to catch a boat to the mainland before crashing.

Henry Farley, defending, said: "It was actually him who telephoned the police and told them what he had done, then he calmly sat and waited for them.

"This incident has shaken him a great deal and, as a result, he has started to seek help."

Vercoe was given a 12-month community order and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.

He was banned from driving for 23 months.
