THE Isle of Wight has been voted the top place in the country to retire.

In a national survey of around 2,000 people adults across the country, 16 per cent said the Isle of Wight was their number one retirement destination.

The Island received more votes than other contenders such as Cornwall and Devon.

Matt Burton, from retirement mortgage company Hodge, which carried out the survey, said: “Planning for retirement can be a big undertaking, with a range of options to consider.

“While it’s easy to see the allure of a beach-bound retirement, our research found the vast majority of those around retirement age are instead opting to stay within the UK, due to a mixture of home comforts and Brexit uncertainty."

The results showed 89 per cent of Brits would rather retire in the UK as retirement to countries such as Spain begins to decline.

The survey took into account the availability of healthcare services, local shops, restaurants and pubs and house prices.

Mr Burton said: "Those deciding to stay in Britain are still looking to flock to the beach, with all of the top five most popular retirement choices featuring coastal towns."
