THE sands of Sandown Bay were pummelled by hundreds of feet on Sunday, for the annual Dash and Splash.

The 5km event raised money for Challenge and Adventure when more than 200 intrepid runners arrived at Shanklin Rowing Club and set off down the beach.

"It was beautiful conditions," said fundraiser and organiser, Karen Eeles.

"We have to do it at the lowest possible tide, so it's always in the summer.

"The beach was very busy, so it was quite the sight — seeing all these runners running among the beach goers."

Dash and Splash offers a unique run along the length of Sandown Bay, beginning at Shanklin Rowing Club and concluding at Yaverland Sailing Club, navigating more than 40 groynes — most straight runs through large gaps — but as many as 14 involving a splash through ankle and waist deep water.

The event needed marshals, and as many as 25 volunteers from Shanklin Rowing Club, Yaverland Sailing Club, Sandown and Shanklin Rotary Clubs, and Ryde Lions offered their services.

"Frederick Fisher started the event six years ago," said Karen.

"It's something they do in Australia, and he brought it to us here at Challenge and Adventure.

"We had 160 people pre-registered for the event, and many more signed up on the day."
