A FOOTBALLER who kicked a police officer as she tried to arrest her for being drunk and disorderly has appeared before Isle of Wight magistrates.

Carmen Simonds was thrown out of Fever nightclub, Newport, at around 3.15am last Sunday (July 21). Door staff said she was excessively drunk.

Simonds, 24, listed as a defender on the East Cowes Vics Ladies website, was out celebrating two of her teammates' birthdays.

Once outside the club, Simonds was approached by a police officer and placed in handcuffs — at which point, Simonds kicked out behind her, striking the police officer in the inner thigh.

The court heard Simonds kicked the officer a second time in the same place as she was escorting her to the police station.

Prosecutor Ann Smout said: "This does not appear to be a problem with police, but a problem with alcohol."

Defending, Oscar Vincent said Simonds, of Beauchamp Drive, Newport, had been drinking before arriving at the club.

Money had been put behind the bar and, as a result, she consumed more alcohol than she had intended to, he said.

In a statement read to the court, Simonds said she was unable to remember the night's events.

Mr Vincent said: "She freely admits she had drunk more than she had intended.

"She realised her mistake and she tells me she is never going to put herself in that situation again.

"Her only comment is this will not be happening again."

Magistrates told Simonds that as she was in a football club, she was not setting a great example to the public.

Simonds was fined £200 and ordered to pay a victim surcharge.
