WHAT A season young Isle of Wight rowers Jamie Gamble and George Glenister have had — seeing all their hard work on the oars bear fruit — the Hampshire and Dorset men’s Junior Pairs Championship, at Coalporters Regatta on Southampton’s River Itchen.

The Shanklin and Sandown Rowing Club talents were one of two club entries in the race.

With both going into the race knowing they only needed one more championship point to claim the title, some time before the season had ended, they qualified comfortably in their heat to reach the final against Southsea.

A great start from the pair saw them establish an early lead, which they extended throughout to see them win the race — and the Championship Trophy, which they will not get their hands on until the Hampshire and Dorset Dinner and Dance ceremony in November.

Emily Faithfull came a creditable third in the ladies’ junior sculls event.

Having qualified for the final as a fastest semi-final loser, Emily upped her performance levels with a great row, finishing a few lengths behind the winner.

In the men’s senior fours, Ryde Rowing Club gained a superb second in the final.

The team, which comprised Ollie Bottrell, Matt Allsopp, Mike Ewing and Mark Chatwin, with Bryony Reeve coxing, comfortably won their semi-final to gain a slot in the twice-round-the-course final, just losing to their main rivals, BTC Southampton.

The men’s junior and novice fours (the ‘B’ crew) narrowly missed out on a final spot, but the ladies’ novice four of Poppy Starkey, Freya Drage, Niamh Edwards and Emily Davis came third in the final.

Joel Smith fought his way to the men’s junior sculls final, where he finished a decent third, while the club’s senior sculler, Mike Ewing, won his heat comfortably, only to suffer disqualification.
