THE second World Pedalo Championships is being held at Kings Manor, Freshwater, next Sunday (August 4).

The charity event, sponsored by Wight Marine, will feature 15 teams competing on the River Yar between 12.30pm and 4pm and includes live music from the popular Frampton Mac.

Over the last three years the pedalo organisers have raised around £50,000 for the Wetwheels Foundation, a charity run by Geoff Holt which provides disabled people access to the sea in specially modified, fully accessible powerboats.

Yarmouth's Miles Peckham, event founder, said: "A couple of years ago, we initially did two events which raised £40,000 for charity.

"The first was our Around the Island Challenge and we then we set a new 100m world record for the Guinness Book of Records, previously held by England cricketers Freddie Flintoff and Steve Harmison.

"So last year, we came up with the idea of a multiple pedalo event to get more people involved and called it the world championship.

"It's bonkers but brilliantly British. We have to thank Jamie and Susie Sheldon, the Island's Lord Lieutenant, for the use of their land and Susie will present the claret jug to the winners."

The Wetwheels Foundation is supplying a water taxi service throughout the day from Yarmouth Harbour.

Free car parking and RIB mooring is also available at Kings Manor Farm.

There is free entry, a cash bar and barbecue.
