WIGHTLINK and Hovertravel have been shortlisted as ferry operator of the year at the Transport Times National Transport Awards.

Wightlink was named as a finalist following its £45 million investment in its Portsmouth to Fishbourne route, which includes the introduction of new ferry, Victoria of Wight.

Hovertravel was shortlisted for the same award for its HoverCare and concessionary travel scheme, which provides assistance and discounts rates to passengers with reduced mobility.

Wightlink chief executive Keith Greenfield said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this national honour.

“It is a tribute to the achievements of everyone involved with our extensive port infrastructure works at Portsmouth and Fishbourne and the successful introduction of our new hybrid flagship Victoria of Wight, on this route.

“In addition, this recognises the hard work carried out every day by colleagues on all our routes and at our ports, to deliver excellent customer care for people who travel with us.”

Head of commercial at Hovertravel, Loretta Lale, said: “This is the second time we have been shortlisted for the National Transport Award’s Ferry Operator of the year and we are especially proud to be in the final this year for our HoverCare initiative.

“We have expanded our efforts in improving accessibility for all with activities such as participating in national campaigns such as Disabled Access Day and training our staff in specific skills such as dementia awareness, Makaton and guided boarding.

“To be recognised as a finalist at a national level for this initiative elevates the conversation about accessibility to the very top of the UK transport sector.”

The 19th annual National Transport Awards aim to celebrate successful national and local transport projects.

The winners will be announced on October 31 at the awards ceremony in Westminster Park Plaza, London.
