ONE OF British sport’s greatest and most historic moments — the England team winning the Cricket World Cup final at Lord’s on Sunday — was something millions of TV viewers savoured.

At least two from the Isle of Wight were among the 30,000 crowd for the occasion — fellow cricket nuts Simon Wratten and Simon Bligh.

It was a dream come true for Wratten, a Ryde-based estate agent, who was due to play for Ryde Cricket Club against a touring side that day — until a friend offered him the ticket for the final.

“I asked one of our two Aussies to skipper the side in my absence. After all, he had no interest in things like World Cup finals,” he joked.

As the match headed to what looked almost certain to be a New Zealand victory in the final over, with England needing 15 runs from the final four deliveries, the two Simons could not believe their eyes — a sporting miracle.

A Ben Stokes six, followed by another six from overthrows, together with two runs and run outs, tied the match and forced it into a sudden death ‘super over’, which England dramatically won on a final ball run out.

Wratten continued: “You could taste the euphoria in the air. I don’t remember the journey home. I just remember singing Champagne Super Over to the tune of Oasis’s Champagne Super Nova, and Cricket’s Coming Home.

“I’m lucky enough to be returning to Lord’s next month for day one of first Ashes test against Australia.

“As much as I’m looking forward to it a great deal, no cricket match I ever attend in my life will match what I witnessed in the World Cup final.”
