A SUPERMARKET trolley, wooden pallet, suitcase and motorbike tyre were just some of the items recovered from the River Medina by cadets and leaders from Ryde Sea Cadet Unit.

Setting out from the sea cadet boat station at Island Harbour, the cadets kayaked to Newport Quay and back collecting litter and other discarded items, both in the water and along the water's edge. The most surprising find was the supermarket trolley which was half submerged.

Once aboard one of the boats, it became a useful collection basket for the other recovered items.

The clean up took place ahead of the official opening of the boat station.

The cadets and juniors of TS Royal George meet twice a week at their base in Station Street, Ryde.

In warmer weather they are more likely to be found out in their kayaks, canoes and sailing craft.
