FIREFIGHTERS attended an out-of-control bonfire in Nettlestone late last night — and warned about the dangers.

Ryde Fire Station sent one fire engine to the call, when alerted by a concerned member of the public at 10.40pm.

It took until midnight to extinguish the blaze at Park Lane, which was determined as out of control.

An IW Fire Service spokesperson told the County Press it was not the person who had lit the fire who had called 999.

They said: "We have had lots of reports from people concerned about bonfires recently, and this one was out of control.

"People shouldn't light fires during such dry conditions, they should always have a way of putting them out close to hand, such as a hose or access to water, and they should not leave them unattended."
