A THUG who roamed the streets of Ryde with a group of friends during a night out, throwing punches at strangers and starting a mass brawl, has been slammed by a judge for his 'shocking' behaviour.

CCTV footage played to the Isle of Wight Crown Court on Friday showed Caylim Sheen and his friends squaring up to another group of men in an alley off Ryde High Street, and start fighting.

The court heard the fight escalated and an unidentified man, believed to be associated with the second group, arrived brandishing a large stick.

Sheen and others could be seen stamping on another man's head.

The court heard no-one involved in the fight was injured.

Sheen, 21, of Elm Grove, Newport, pleaded guilty to affray at a previous hearing at the IW Magistrates' Court.

Defending, Elisabeth Bussey-Jones, said: "Undoubtedly, his behaviour in the streets that night is shocking.

"At the time, he had claimed that he was on a three day bender.

"I would ask your honour to accept no-one was seriously injured in the fight and, while there were others involved, it was only Caylim who was arrested.

"This was a mindless bit of violence between two groups of males who were participating in it."

Judge Malcolm Gibney said: "You and others are seen marauding through the street acting in a totally unreasonable manner.

"The footage discloses not just punching, but stamping also. You keep very poor company and are easily led."

He sentenced Sheen to 39 weeks in prison, suspended for two years.

Sheen was also given a 12-week curfew, from 7.30pm to 7.30am, and ordered to complete 100 hours of unpaid work.
