A CAR-LOVING couple will join the world's biggest Mini grid at the home of British motorsport.

Michael and Rozanna Hammond, of Freshwater, took part in the Mini's 40th anniversary celebrations two decades ago and will return to Silverstone for the 60th anniversary parade next weekend (July 26).

Their 1969 Mini Traveller was originally a birthday present to Rozanna from her parents and the family have owned it since new.

It has been lovingly restored to its former glory for the parade by Island specialists John Ellis and Fred Phillips, who have re-chromed the grill and bumpers, tidied the interior paintwork and re-sprayed the front end, which was damaged in a garage fire.

Michael said: "We gave the car to my son James for his 40th birthday but when we visited him on the mainland it looked very tired.

"So we took it back and have had it restored for his children to enjoy in years to come."

The car has covered at least 110,000 miles and has the number plate 1GXR, which stands for one jolly exciting ride.
