TWO parties were held to celebrate Gwenyth Jelf's 100th birthday, attended by her children and grandchildren from across the Isle of Wight — and the world.

The first was held on the Saturday before her birthday, so her sons and grandchildren could celebrate with her, and the second on her actual birthday, last Tuesday.

Both parties were held at Inver House in Bembridge, where Gwenyth lives, and both could be held in the garden due to heatwave that swept the Island.

Gwenyth was born on the Isle of Wight and spent most of her childhood in St Helens, Bembridge and Sandown, where she attended school.

She later trained as a nanny, working in London, which was where she met her first husband, who served in the Second World War.

As a forces wife, Gwenyth travelled to many places, including Cyprus, Germany, the Netherlands and France.

She planned to retire to the Dordogne, but her Island routes called her home to Bembridge.

Gwenyth later remarried and had two daughters, one of whom lives in New Zealand with her family and had flown over for the special occasion.

While cutting her cake, made by daughter Judith, Gwenyth made everyone laugh, as she said: "Oh my goodness, everyone will break their teeth on this."
