YARMOUTH Sailing club celebrated its 50th anniversary weekend with a series of events including a golden ball and parade of craft.

A full house of 60 members and guests attended the ball on Friday, with music from the Dance Preachers.

Sailing Club Commodore Liz Mead said: "It was a wonderful evening and fantastic weekend to mark our anniversary.

"We had so much going on. The ball was amazing and everyone was up on the dance floor.

"Then on Saturday morning there were children's activities at Mill Creek as well as a golden plant stall and tombola at the clubhouse which was supported by many local businesses.

"There was also a display of photographs charting the history of the club from its beginning.

"In the afternoon there were children's games on The Green and a strawberry tea.

"Then, in the evening, we had a barbecue with music from the Shalfleet Shanty Singers and Masquerade.

"To wrap things up we had the parade of craft on Sunday with the highlight being the Yarmouth RNLI Lifeboat going up the river and then coming back down past the club with its hoses going."

During the parade, Liz was on board the review boat, Chris Waddington's classic yacht Puritan, accompanied by double Olympic sailing gold medallist Shirley Robertson, Anne Kyle, commodore of the Royal Solent Yacht Club and Keith Gentleman, commodore of Brading Haven Yacht Club.

The youngest sailing member of the club, Patrick Tate, led the parade which included all types of craft from dinghies to cruisers.
