THE CHILDREN at Newchurch Nursery have been running a cafe — taking on the roles of waiters, chefs and washer-uppers.

The youngsters made invitations for their families and they have had dozens of visitors through their door.

They enjoyed serving cakes, iced biscuits, and cucumber sandwiches, with tea, chocolate milkshake and orange juice to wash it down.

Lucy Coleman, nursery manager, said: "The children have learnt so many skills, such as spreading butter, cutting cucumber, mixing icing to the right consistency and making real tea.

"They have used real tea pots, cups, saucers and plates and have been extremely careful with them.

"They have been very polite and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience of 'cooking' for their family members.

"We decided to add a guest book after so many family members were full of compliments for the cafe, and the children have been provided with wonderful reviews.

"The idea for the cafe came from our company director Jill Wade-Smith.

"The staff have been so proud of the children and the confidence that they have shown, and they have also worked hard to ensure it has been a great experience for the children."
