THE STATE of a prominent seafront site in Sandown has caused anger among local residents — but the owner has promised to clear the debris.

Carlauren Group owns the Ocean Hotel and Kings Bar on Sandown Esplanade and was in the process of developing the site into a hotel and beach club.

They confirmed to the County Press today they have had to stop work immediately due to a dispute with a contractor.

They said: "Carlauren understands that the area does not look aesthetically pleasing and this may cause distress to local residents.

"Their patience is appreciated while we come to a resolution which will include, once able to return to site, clearing the debris.

"Carlauren anticipate that this will be actioned within the coming weeks."

Residents took to social media to air their views on the site, calling it a bomb site and an eyesore.

Carlauren's plans to open a luxury beach club, since axed, promised a hot tub, indoor and outdoor bars and restaurants, and a swimming pool.

However, the IW Council said the firm had never even discussed the plans with the authority.

An IW Council spokesperson said this week: "The council is aware of the condition of the former Ocean Hotel site, and following the announcement from Carlauren Group that their proposals will not be going ahead, officers will be visiting the site to investigate whether or not any action is required."

Carlauren said its sister site, Auckland House Hotel in Shanklin, has been fully developed to a 25-bedroom operating hotel, using local suppliers and staff to provide an exceptional holiday experience, which is planned and anticipated for the Ocean Hotel site too.
