WHILE the Isle of Wight Festival was in full swing, a church in Newport was running its own festival.

The Church on the Roundabout, Newport, ran its regular Fringe Festival — the church's way of coming alongside the festival goers and helping them along.

There was free phone charging, wifi, free refreshments and live music.

One of the bands that played at this year's Fringe Festival, Fireside — made up of teenagers Darcy Marriner, 15, Jonathan Gibson, 17, and Jodie Murphy, 15 — made their debut having formed last year.

The band members describe their main inspiration as The Beatles, and although they have known each other since they were toddlers, they say it is church that has brought them together.

"As a festival goer myself, I recognise that festivals have a lot of hidden costs, so as a church our aim is to try and help people along by offering things like phone charging for free," said church leader, Tony Murphy.

"Our famous sign says God loves you, and the aim of our Fringe Festival is to demonstrate some of that love, so it's not just words."
