A GROUP of Island residents with learning disabilities have tried their hand at driving lessons.

The event, now in its seventh year, was organised by DLIW (Driving Lessons IW) in conjunction with the Phoenix Project, Ryde, and other providers of disability support services.

Driving instructors John Marsh, Ronnie Bucket, Paul Durbridge, Trevor Prior, Paul Buckland, Shaun Spicer, Briony Cave and John Hayes gave their time for free to lead the session.

They used the dual controls while the new drivers steered.

John said: "We equally get as much out if doing it — it feels good being able to help the group do something that we take for granted.

"We only go ten miles per hour, but they enjoy steering, putting the radio on, going for motorbike rides and driving the Minis — especially those interested in cars.

"Personally, I love watching the families see their loved ones driving — it must be hard sometimes, so it's nice to give something back and see them all smiling together."
