A MAN has been arrested on suspicion of rape following an alleged assault at a Ventnor churchyard.

Police were called to the scene at St Catherine's Church yesterday (Tuesday).

An Isle of Wight police spokesperson said: "Officers are now investigating following an incident which took place in the churchyard on Church Street, Ventnor at around 5.30pm on Tuesday, June 18.

"A 35-year-old man from Sandown has been arrested on suspicion of rape.

"He is currently in police custody."

UPDATED JUNE 20, 9AM

The man who remained in custody yesterday (Wednesday), has been released on bail.

A police spokesperson said: "The man has been released on bail with conditions until 16 July."
