FIREFIGHTERS have been called to a fire in Sandown this afternoon (Sunday).

Four fire engines — from Sandown, Shanklin and two from Ryde — were called to the scene, at Carter Street, shortly before 1pm.

UPDATE 2.19pm: The fire was discovered in the stairwell of a derelict building, on the ground floor.

A spokesperson for the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service said: "The building was heavily smoke-logged. Four pumps were sent to make sure no-one was inside and check there were no other seats of fire."

The fire has now been extinguished.

The spokesperson said a police investigation would be carried out to determine the cause of the fire.
