GRAB yourself a £5 bargain — Ryde is taking part in the first national Fiver Fest next week.

The seaside town will join with 40 other towns across the UK to promote and celebrate independent business from June 8 to 15.

At least sixteen Ryde businesses are taking part, including Ryde Pier Cafe, Wight Trash and Grace's Bakery and each will offer a special £5 deal or offer.

Sugar and Spice Lingerie will be selling all their hosiery for a fiver, while Bagel Wrap will offer customers any bagel and a drink to take away for £5.

If every adult in Ryde were to spend £5 a week in an independent business, £2.7 million would be generated for the local economy annually.

Chair of Ryde Business Association, Zoe Thompson said: "The Fiver Fest campaign is all about highlighting the importance of our small businesses. For Ryde this is particularly crucial, as we have very few national chains.

"Although some may see this is a disadvantage it has actually contributed to the strength of our town, we are not reliant on a national retailer presence which has allowed the town to be more resilient in the last few years of very difficult economic times.

"Having said that the only way Ryde can remain vibrant and succeed into the future is with people supporting the small retailers and businesses that work incredibly hard.

"The Fiver Fest allows a full week of us celebrating these businesses, and reminding people to use them or potentially lose them."
