AN ISLE of Wight pub is battling to raise funds for cancer research and win a place in a Spartan chariot cycle race.

The race takes place in London, on June 20. Staff at more than 100 Stonegate pubs are competing to win seats in one of eight cycle chariots — including a team from the Hogshead in Newport.

Whoever raises the most money gets to take part in the event — a five mile race around central London in Spartan fancy dress.

A similar event in 2017 raised more than £70,000 for the Noah's Ark Children's Hospice.

Colin Hawkins, operations director at the Stonegate Pub Company, who came up with the fundraising idea, said: "We’ve all been touched by cancer in some way in our lives, so we wanted to do our bit to raise money to help stamp out this awful disease.

"The pub teams and their customers are all behind this and together we intend to raise a big chunk for the cause, so let’s all support them and start donating."
