BINSTEAD resident John Henry Reynolds, who spent more than 80 years in the house of his birth, has died after a short illness, aged 87.

He was the only child of Marjorie and Wilfred Reynolds. His father died when he was a child.

He attended Ryde School and spent periods of his childhood at the Lord Mayor Treloar hospital, Alton, for treatment of a hip deformity, which troubled him throughout his life.

He worked at Ranelagh Works, Fishbourne, JS White's Cowes shipyard and Canning Day's garage, Newport.

Prior to the closure of Canning Day in 1985, he would collect and delivering Bedford coaches to Island operators.

He worked at Price's Garage until 1995, when he retired.

Mr Reynolds was a keen motorist and interested in local transport, including railways, buses and ferries.

He collected the first double decker bus allocated to Ryde depot in 1945, and was a member of the IW Steam Railway and IW Bus and Coach Museum — to which he passed on his large collection of photographs and press cuttings.

He cared for his mother in her later years, until her death in 1990.

Following several serious falls, he moved into a care home in Shanklin, and another in Havenstreet, where he died on May 9.

His funeral will take place at noon tomorrow (Friday), at the IW Crematorium.
