A CAT was subjected to a vicious attack and an object forcibly inserted into its anus.

Owner Fiona Freeman, of Newport, returned home last Tuesday evening and noticed something wrong with her youngest cat, Puff.

She said: "He was so out of character, at first we thought it might be a kidney stone."

After attempting to examine him, Fiona took Puff to the vet — who said he could not have been attacked by another cat as there were no external injuries.

The vet concluded he must have been attacked by someone who had forced an object inside him.

Puff was in pain due to his injuries and his bowels were blocked. The vet had to empty Puff's bladder for him.

Fiona was told Puff may have to be put down. However, after four days of treatment with pain medication, antibiotics and laxatives, Puff started to recover.

She said: "We've got to see if his body continues to repair itself, and hope he doesn't begin to deteriorate.

"Puff is the most loving animal, he still trusts humans, even now.

"If a person can do this to an innocent animal, I worry they could attack other people too."

Police are investigating the incident. A spokesperson said: "The local neighbourhoods team has been made aware should further information, or other incidents, come to light."

A spate of cat attacks have been reported on social media in recent weeks.
