EMERGENCY vehicles have been unable to squeeze past cars parked on the main road into Yarmouth — and one ambulance service staff member had to get out and redirect traffic.

As reported, residents have raised concerns about people parking at Bouldnor Road.

On Saturday, a member of the Isle of Wight Ambulance Service had to get out of the vehicle and redirect traffic before the ambulance could make its way towards the town.

On Sunday, a police car on a blue light call had to mount the pavement to get past a caravan coming the other way.

Residents have said people park near the Thorley turn-off, sometimes leaving their vehicles for days at a time, and walk into town.

One, Inez Newman, said: "It's getting worse. There are ten to 15 cars parked all the time on that stretch of road and no-one will give way.

"People’s intolerance and selfishness just shines through.

"On Saturday, an ambulance was stuck and one of the crew had to stop the flow of traffic. It just saddens me.

"Then, on Sunday, we saw a car towing a caravan — it didn't stop in time to allow a police car with its blue lights on to get through, so it had to mount the pavement.

"There have already been accidents on this stretch of road. I can see it will only get worse as we hit the peak tourist season."

Cllr Stuart Hutchinson, Isle of Wight Councillor for the West Wight, said it would take double yellow lines to stop people parking.

He said: "The problem has worsened since restrictions were put on Bouldnor View car park to stop people parking there all day.

"To solve it, a Traffic Regulation Order would have to be put in place and they cost around £4,000.

"Basically, to stop the cars parking there you would have to paint double yellow lines, on both sides of the road, up past Bouldnor. This would make it restrictive for people to walk into town."
