AN ISLE of Wight town has been named among the best seaside spots in the UK.

Following a survey, carried out by tourism website Day Out with the Kids, Shanklin was listed among the top family holidays.

Shanklin finished 21st in a list topped by Bournemouth, with Brighton, Torquay, Weymouth and Blackpool making up the top five.

Among the key deciding factors were the beaches, with 85 per cent of the nation saying clean, sandy beaches were key to an unforgettable UK beach holiday.

Shanklin's beaches recently

won a seaside award

from Keep Britain Tidy.

Child-friendly places to grab a bite to eat, and great fish and chips were also factored in, alongside activities such as tucking into a picnic, and listening to the sounds of the sea.

Shanklin also won points for its nearby visitor attractions to keep the kids entertained.

Lisa O’Keeffe, senior brand and content manager at

"The Isle of Wight is a fantastic destination for family visitors, so we’re delighted to award Shanklin with silver status this year."
