THE Isle of Wight's oldest WI has reached its 100th birthday — with its oldest member leading the celebrations.

Ningwood and Shalfleet WI was formed on May 19, 1919. Mollie Earle, who has just turned 99, cut the ribbon at a celebration event and welcomed visitors.

The Queen and Duchess of Sussex sent congratulatory letters after receiving limited edition tea towels, designed by Anthea Dunkley.

The event was organised by Nicola Saunders and attended by Isle of Wight MP Bob Seely and Deputy Lord Lieutenant Peter Kingston.

Nicola said: "We were one of the first two WI's on the Island, formed on the same day as Wootten Bridge, but they are no longer here.

"We had our history on display over the last century, including the report of our opening ceremony which was published in the County Press.

"There were displays and photographs and the ensign of the HMS Visenda, which was an anti U-boat trawler and served during the Second World War.

"We adopted the ship and would send the crew books and knitwear, general home from home stuff.

"There were other stalls which included a fashion parade of dresses from the 60's and 70's.

"We also showed how household chores have changed over the years.

"Back in the day, women would spend a whole day washing, boiling and drying clothes using a dolly tub and mangle. Now, a washing machine does all that on its own in a couple of hours."

There were refreshments and cakes at the event, held at Shalfleet Village Hall on Saturday, May 18, and afternoon tea enjoyed by members and friends.

A special 100th birthday cake was also made by Anthea.

The Ningwood and Shalfleet WI meet at Corf Farm, Corf Road, Shalfleet, on the second Tuesday of each month at 2pm.
