TALENTED young designers have had their work shortlisted for an awards competition.

The shortlist has been revealed for this year's Young Designers Awards, an annual competition for Isle of Wight children and young people aged between five and 18 years old.

Participants were set a brief based around an Island landmark or regeneration issue, and encouraged to think about architecture and the built environment.

They used a range of media to present their designs, creating three dimensional models and drawings, accompanied by a written description.

The competition, founded in 2013, was supported by Island schools and formed part of design technology and art lessons.

The entries have been shortlisted by a panel of judges — architect Coleman Cotter, Artecology director Claire Hector and artist Celia Wilkinson.

This year's brief asked competitors to design a new use for a train carriage — encouraging people to use the Island Line trains.

Claire said: "Why aren’t these trains everywhere? Circuses, cinemas and fit clubs pulled by trains would be such a good idea."

All the shortlisted entries will be on display at the awards evening, on Wednesday, June 12.

Coleman said: “It is nice to see the continued entries, and to see how they are improving all the time. The ideas are still out there eight years down the line."
