HUNDREDS of scooters gathered in their droves on bank holiday weekend for the Lambretta Day celebrations.

The two-day event, established in 1999, celebrated its 20th anniversary with a record 500 scooters, complete with live music, classic scooter displays, and the traditional Sunday scooter rally.

Daytime entertainment on Saturday included live music from Ska'd for Life and Subculture at Ryde Pavilion, stalls, a beer tent, barbecue and DJs.

The Jam'd and Who's Who played in the evening, alongside DJ Simon Ball at The Balcony Bars.

On Sunday, riders gathered at The Riverside Centre, Newport, for the traditional ride out, arriving at Ryde Pavillion for more entertainment.

Television stars Shane Richie and Tony Tobin — filming a Channel 5 show on the Isle of Wight — also joined in the celebrations.

The pair visited the Visual Impact clothing store in Newport to get kitted out before joining the ride out, and later presented the trophies.

Shane was even loaned 1979 original mod parka owned by event organiser Steve Robson.

Steve said: "It was great to see so many people that have kept the scene going.

"The Isle of Wight is fast becoming a bit of a mecca for scooters.

"It's definitely a place where people can go and know they're going to have a good time."

Trophies were custom made by Steve himself – crafted from bike pistons among other materials — with winner Geoff Osborne taking home the best overall scooter award, for his wasp-themed Vespa, Sting.

The Butterfly Collective and Outta Time played at a jam-packed Pavillion following the ride out, with singer Lizzie Black.

Steve said: "Lizzie was incredible, probably the closest act I've seen to Amy Winehouse."

Sunday evening saw Secret Affair and Subculture play The Balcony Bars.

More than 1,000 people were estimated to have attended the event over the two days.
